The Last Draft - A Meadowfield Mystery by Agatha Frost
SYNOPSIS: Meet Ellie Swan... an introverted bookworm with a history degree stuck at a crossroads. After putting her degree to work in a TV studio's historical continuity department for years, the studio merges with a giant streaming service and Ellie loses her dream job. She finds herself working in a coffee shop to make ends meet, and while waiting for the perfect opportunity to come along... she gets a phone call informing her that her dear Granny Maggie has broken her hip.
Leaving the city and her coffee shop job behind, Ellie returns to her quaint hometown of Meadowfield to care for her grandmother, but she finds more than just the family's beloved bookshop, Meadowfield Books, in disarray. Granny Maggie's hip was broken during a robbery gone wrong, and the thief—a relative of a deceased local author—is found dead. The item the thief stole? The local author's final manuscript.
While juggling caring for her grandmother and running the failing bookshop, Ellie finds herself in a web of mystery and murder, as she encounters a cast of characters each with a motive for coveting the author's final manuscript. Utilising her passion for history and her old community ties, Ellie untangles a series of clever clues and red herrings. From the financial desperation of the thief's father to the secretive actions of a local historian and antique dealer, the plot thickens when another of the family is also found dead. With a knack for history and a heart for sleuthing, Ellie uncovers hidden truths, from coveted manuscripts to clandestine motives, but can Ellie's keen insights and tenacity ensure justice is served? And will she find a renewed sense of purpose in her long-forgotten home?

SNYNOPSIS: In Nazi-occupied France, an American film star takes on the most dangerous role of her life in a gripping novel about loyalty and resistance, inspired by a true story, from the Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestselling author of The Secret Stealers.
Paris, 1939. Hollywood actress Drue Leyton, married to Frenchman Jacques Tartière, lives as an expatriate in love. But when her husband is dispatched to Brittany to work as a liaison for the British military, Drue finds herself alone with her housekeeper, adrift and heartsick in her adopted city. With her career and fame forty-five hundred miles away, Drue accepts an opportunity that will change her life forever.
Befriended by seasoned wartime journalist Dorothy Thompson and urged on by political operative Jean Fraysse, Drue broadcasts radio programs to the United States. Her duty: shake America from its apathy and, as Nazis encroach and France is occupied, push for resistance and help from the US. As Drue and Jean fall under suspicion, Hitler sends his own message: when Drue’s adopted country is conquered, she will be executed.
In a Paris that is no longer safe, Drue’s political passion is ignited. She’s prepared to risk anything to fight the enemy no matter how dangerous it gets—for her, for everyone she loves, and for everything she’s fighting for.
Murder Most Bookish (Chilton Hills Mystery Book 1)by Anthea Fraser
SYNOPSIS: Cosy up with a cup of tea and treat yourself to an utterly irresistible mystery, set amid England’s breathtakingly beautiful Chiltern Hills.
Meet Rona Parish, a feisty biographer with a talent for digging up murder and mystery wherever she goes — and Gus, the golden retriever, nipping loyally at her heels!
Rona jumps at the chance to write about Theo Harvey, a famous author who drowned in stranger-than-fiction circumstances. But is she diving head-long into danger?
Six months ago, Harvey was found floating face-down in a peaceful stream. Not far from the quaint little cottage where he penned his bestsellers.
His drowning is a puzzle the police can’t solve. So now Rona’s on the case — ready to dig deep to find the answers Harvey’s grieving widow craves.
But someone out there doesn’t appreciate her snooping.
It’s not long before Rona finds a sinister note tucked into her golden retriever’s collar, warning her to drop the project while she still can . . .
Fans of Faith Martin, M.C. Beaton, Richard Osman, the Reverend Richard Coles and Betty Rowlands are sure to be enchanted by these charming mysteries, set in the picture-perfect Chiltern Hills.
I can’t pass up a deal on books like this and was so happy to add them to my Kindle Library. The Last Draft and Murder Most Bookish were $.99 each while Good Night From Paris was $1.99. Jane Healey became one of my favorite authors after receiving a digital ARC from Amazon First Reads a few months ago for The Women of Arlington Hall: A Novel.
APRIL’S SELECTION FROM AFR
In April I chose The Roaring Ridleys by K.M. Colley. I haven’t started reading it yet and as I was writing this post I noticed the reviews it’s received so far. Goodreads reviewers give it a 2.93 and Amazon readers give it an overall rating of 2.9. BUT, I do plan to read it and make my own decision. Stay tuned for a review post in the future.
I might add this to my May TBR, but it’s sitting a bit lower after picking up the aforementioned books I got on sale. Jane Healey is one of the authors I will always read first. Which reminds me that I need to create a page for this site with my favorite authors and books.
We’ll keep this one short and sweet because yard work is calling and I must answer. It’s that or my little dog will complain that she has to do her business in grass that scratches her belly.
Happy reading,
B
