Fours year ago, I learned to play Magic the Gathering. My sons had played MtG for 6 months or so and told my husband about it. He played as a teenager up until he moved across the country to be with me. He was thrilled to get back into it. He didn’t think I’d be interested but after watching several play sessions, I decided I wanted to learn. The first deck he built me was mono green and used Galta as the Commander. A month or so after I started playing my niece-in-law said she wanted to learn.
We have a lot more decks, dice and experience after 4 years. We continue to challenge ourselves with new decks and there are a lot of moments filled with laughter.
Gaming is part of who we are as a family. It’s what we do to get away from the noise of what’s going on in the world today. It keeps us bonded and allows us to also share what’s going on with our lives.
It’s not everything in our lives, but it’s definitely a blessing to be able to gather together for a few hours and just have fun. Especially during winter months when the pool is closed and we’re counting the days until summer arrives.
I’ve been a gamer all my life. As a kid I enjoyed playing board games with my mom. As a mom, I loved introducing my kids to video games and playing them together. My boys had a rough time in the years after the divorce until I met and married J. As a gamer, he fit right in, and bonded with them through games. It’s something we’ll enjoy together as we pass the tradition onto the Grands and Greats.
